Mental health challenges rise among university students in Ecuador and Peru

Mental health challenges among university students are a growing concern in Ecuador and Peru. In Ecuador, research published by Universidad Hemisferios indicates that one in four university students exhibits symptoms of depression. This aligns with international trends where approximately one in three students report depressive symptoms and nearly 40% experience anxiety.

In Peru, academic stress has been identified as a primary factor impacting the mental health of university students. Experts from the Universidad Nacional de San Cristóbal de Huamanga note that stress, anxiety, and depression can negatively affect academic performance as well as social and family relationships.

In response to these issues, academic institutions are increasing awareness efforts, particularly around World Mental Health Day. Efforts include promoting early detection, stress management, and mental health first aid to support students navigating the pressures of higher education and future professional integration.
