Mental health challenges rise in Spain's Galicia and Nerbioi-Ibaizabal regions
In Galicia, Spain, authorities are addressing a significant rise in mental health issues and psychotropic drug consumption. Data indicates that Galicia has led Spain in antidepressant consumption for six consecutive years, marking thirteen years of continuous increases. The region recorded 168.4 daily doses per thousand inhabitants in the last fiscal year, which is 52% higher than the national average and 83% higher than fifteen years ago. In response, the Consellería de Sanidade has established a strategic plan through 2030 to promote the rational use of medications, such as benzodiazepines, and to improve access to brief psychological treatments.
In the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal area, the Gazteak Saretzen initiative has been launched to support the emotional well-being of young people following a notable increase in mental illness, emotional distress, and loneliness. The program utilizes a professional team to provide prevention, early detection, and support within daily environments like schools, sports centers, and youth clubs. The project aims to build community networks by training educators, coaches, and families to act as sensitive observers who can identify needs and connect youth with appropriate resources in a confidential manner.
