Mental health concerns rise in Germany as eating disorders increase

Data from the Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH) indicates a significant rise in eating disorders among girls and women aged 12 to 17. Between 2019 and 2023, cases in this demographic increased by nearly 50 percent, rising from 101 to 150 cases per 10,000 insured individuals. This trend is also supported by Federal Statistical Office data, which shows a long-term increase in hospitalizations for eating disorders among girls.

In addition to dietary issues, there is growing concern regarding the mental health of students in Germany. Factors such as academic pressure, loneliness, cyberbullying, and sensory overload are contributing to psychological distress. In some instances, students facing high suicidal ideation are being returned to classrooms shortly after psychiatric stays due to a lack of treatment capacity. Experts suggest that schools should focus on fostering self-confidence and resilience through small successes to mitigate the fear of failure and excessive performance pressure.
