Mental health crisis intensifies in Grenada and Ghana
Rising suicide rates in Grenada and Ghana have prompted urgent calls for increased mental health awareness and intervention. In Grenada, ten suicides recorded in a single month have led experts to warn of a growing crisis driven by economic stress, workplace burnout, and unaddressed personal trauma.
In Ghana, the Mental Health Authority reported 175 suicide deaths and approximately 1,173 attempts during the first half of 2025, an increase from the 134 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024. Most affected individuals in Ghana were males between the ages of 15 and 29.
Health experts and consultants are emphasizing the importance of recognizing subtle warning signs, such as social withdrawal, changes in eating or sleeping patterns, and extreme fatigue. In both regions, there is a push for better community intervention, workplace support to combat burnout, and increased investment in childhood emotional literacy to prevent long-term mental health struggles.
