Mental health experts and officials advocate for breaking suicide taboos

Psychiatrist Jim van Os and Nieuwegein Mayor Marijke van Beukering have addressed the social taboos surrounding suicide and the importance of open dialogue to prevent loss of life.

Van Os explains that the societal taboo serves several purposes, including discouraging suicidal ideation and preventing the romanticization of death in the media. He notes that while suicide is no longer a criminal offense in some contexts, it remains a moral and biological challenge to the concept of a meaningful existence. He emphasizes that within clinical settings, there should be no taboo regarding the subject.

In Nieuwegein, Mayor van Beukering is highlighting World Suicide Prevention Week, held from September 7 to 13. The municipality is hosting various activities, such as the ‘Walk into the Light’ event and a textile art project, to encourage people to speak openly about mental health. The initiative aims to break the silence and remind individuals that they are not alone in their struggles.
