Mental health experts highlight early warning signs of suicidal ideation
Suicide remains a leading cause of death globally and in the United States, where research from 2023 indicates one death occurs every 11 minutes. However, suicide is considered preventable through the recognition of warning signs.
Common indicators of distress include changes in behavior, mood, or thought patterns. Individuals at risk may express feelings of hopelessness, being a burden to others, feeling trapped, or having no reason to live. Verbal cues can be direct or indirect, such as stating, “I wish I wasn’t here.”
Support is available through the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which provides 24/7 confidential assistance via call or text. For life-threatening emergencies, 911 should be contacted immediately.
