Mental health experts identify signs and barriers to seeking therapy
Mental health professionals highlight various indicators and barriers regarding the pursuit of psychological support. For individuals, particularly introverts, signs of needing therapy may include persistent sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, emotional numbness, or a loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. Changes in sleep patterns, such as racing thoughts at night or excessive fatigue, can signal underlying stress, anxiety, or depression.
In the United States, approximately one in five adults struggle with symptoms of depression or anxiety. Barriers to seeking care include the complexity of the healthcare system, the stigma surrounding mental health, and the overwhelming nature of the initial steps required to find a provider. Experts suggest that starting with a primary care physician can facilitate referrals to appropriate specialists, such as psychiatrists or psychologists. Additionally, teletherapy is noted as a potential entry point for those not yet ready for in-person appointments.
