Mental health facilities face infrastructure and environmental challenges

Mental health facilities in Argentina and the Dominican Republic are facing distinct operational challenges regarding their environments and infrastructure.

In Paraná, Argentina, the Hospital Escuela de Salud Mental is launching an initiative to renovate common areas for female patients. The project, supported by the municipal program 'Todas las Manos' and the hospital's cooperative, aims to replace deteriorated spaces with murals, plants, and furniture to create a more humane atmosphere. Organizers state that improving the physical environment is a form of mental health care and historical reparation.

Conversely, the Mental Health Unit at the Hospital Regional Universitario Jaime Mota in the Dominican Republic is struggling with severe facility deficiencies. Dr. Deyanira Cordero Moquete reported that the crisis intervention area has lacked air conditioning for approximately one year. High temperatures and inadequate climate control have created safety risks, including a recent incident where a patient used a fan as a weapon. Additionally, the unit faces security shortages, operating with only two agents to cover a 24-hour service.
