Mental health identified as primary driver of school absenteeism in Alicante
Experts at the fifth annual congress of the European Observatory SOS-Attendance in Alicante are highlighting a shift in school absenteeism. Unlike previous eras where social exclusion was the primary driver, current trends indicate that mental health issues are increasingly responsible for students missing classes.
Carolina Gonzálvez, a professor at the University of Alicante leading the project, noted that anxiety, stress, depression, and school bullying are significant factors. These issues often manifest as social fear or panic regarding classroom participation. Experts emphasize the need for prevention strategies to address these mental health challenges during childhood and adolescence to avoid lifelong consequences.
