World Mental Health Day initiatives focus on stigma reduction and patient voices

Global observances for World Mental Health Day have prompted various international actions focused on reducing social stigma and integrating the lived experiences of patients into policy-making. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized a theme of ‘Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change’, advocating for individuals with mental health conditions to play active roles in designing and evaluating care services.

In various regions, community-led initiatives are underway. In Spain, organizations like Fundación INTRAS and the semFYC are addressing the high prevalence of anxiety and depression, with the latter calling for a more rational use of psychotropic drugs. In the Dominican Republic, the National Health Service and the DIDA have called for increased insurance coverage and the normalization of mental health discussions to prevent social exclusion.

Other regional responses include the implementation of community-based care models in Argentina and Colombia, and awareness campaigns in Peru and Costa Rica regarding the impact of digital technology and emotional toxicity on psychological well-being. Educational institutions, such as the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and the Universidad María Auxiliadora, are also integrating mental health support into their student welfare programs.
