Mental health initiatives and challenges highlighted in Ghana and Nigeria

In Ghana, the Kabaka Foundation has commissioned a new 35-bed mental health unit at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua. The facility, named the Nana Owiredu Wadie I Mental Health Unit, was funded by the foundation at a cost of GH¢1.3 million. The unit includes three wards, consulting rooms, a pharmacy, and recreational areas, specifically designed to support individuals battling mental health conditions and substance use disorders.

In Nigeria, medical experts at Karu General Hospital in Abuja have highlighted significant barriers to mental healthcare, including social stigma, misconceptions, and rising drug abuse among youth. During an awareness event for World Mental Health Day, psychiatrist Dr. Chibuzo Anoji noted that spiritual misconceptions often delay professional medical treatment. Experts emphasized the need for increased government support, better implementation of the Mental Health Act, and addressing the shortage of professionals caused by the migration of healthcare workers.
