Mental health issues drive German apprentice dropout risks
A study conducted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) reveals that mental health issues are a primary driver for apprentices in Germany considering or already having terminated their vocational training. Nearly 40 percent of those contemplating a contract termination cited psychological burdens as the main reason.
The research indicates that approximately 20 percent of apprentices feel frequently or almost always emotionally burdened, with women reporting higher levels of stress than men. Among apprentices with severely restricted well-being, nearly 74 percent are considering dropping out, compared to only 12 percent of those with stable well-being.
The economic impact is also significant, as 62 percent of surveyed companies report that mental health issues among trainees negatively affect productivity. Additionally, data from DGB-Jugend suggests that half of all apprentices feel psychological pressure due to performance demands, time constraints, and staff shortages within their companies.
