Mental health issues rise in Germany as sick leave increases
Recent studies and health data indicate a significant rise in mental health challenges and social isolation. Data from hkk Krankenkasse for the first half of 2026 shows that sick leave due to psychological disorders increased by 9.3 percent, making mental health diagnoses the most frequent reason for absence, surpassing musculoskeletal issues. These cases also resulted in longer absences, averaging 38.8 days per instance.
Research also highlights the impact of lifestyle and digital habits on well-being. A large-scale study involving over 51,000 participants across 15 countries found a correlation between smoking and higher levels of loneliness. Additionally, research from IU International University indicates high levels of digital stress in Germany, with 44.2 percent of respondents feeling constantly ‘on call’ and nearly 47 percent reporting internal tension when attempting to disconnect. Among those aged 16 to 30, digital device usage is particularly intense, with over 90 percent checking devices at least once or twice per hour.
