Mental health issues rise in Santiago, Dominican Republic

Specialists have identified depression, anxiety, and occupational stress as primary mental health challenges affecting the population in Santiago, Dominican Republic. These issues impact family relationships, professional performance, and overall quality of life.

During the inauguration of the Humanízate 2026 International Congress on Mental Health and Integral Well-being, organized by the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), Dr. Zoilo Emilio García-Batista noted that depression affects approximately 4.7% of the Dominican population, while anxiety affects 5.7%.

Beyond personal health, these conditions carry economic and social consequences, including medical expenses, workplace absenteeism, staff turnover, and early retirement. Experts urge individuals to seek professional help through primary care, hospitals, or specialized clinics at the first sign of symptoms to prevent conditions from becoming chronic.
