Mental health stigma prevents individuals from seeking psychiatric help

Psychiatrist José Ángel Alcalá, head of psychiatry at Hospital Quirónsalud Córdoba and Centro Médico Quirónsalud Jaén, highlights the barriers preventing individuals from seeking mental health support. He notes that fear of diagnosis, social prejudices, and misconceptions regarding psychiatric consultations often cause patients to delay professional help, even when distress impacts daily life.

To address these stigmas, Alcalá emphasizes that the initial consultation must serve as a safe, confidential, and judgment-free space. He argues that visiting a psychiatrist should be viewed as a natural step in healthcare, similar to consulting any other specialist. The goal of the first assessment is to understand the individual's context and needs rather than applying a rapid label.

Treatment strategies are tailored to the patient and may include pharmacological options, coordination with psychological services, lifestyle guidance, and individualized clinical follow-up.
