Mental health strategies for elderly to reduce depression and cognitive decline

Neurologist Fereshteh Ashtari, a faculty member at Esfahan University of Medical Sciences, has highlighted key strategies to mitigate the risk of depression and cognitive decline in the elderly during National Mental Health Week.

As brain cells age, natural declines in memory, judgment, and reaction speed occur. To combat these changes, Ashtari emphasizes the necessity of maintaining strong social and emotional connections. A lack of social interaction can trap seniors in a negative cycle of depression and frustration, particularly following retirement.

To prevent cognitive issues such as Alzheimer's, experts recommend a combination of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Engaging in activities that require focus, such as learning new subjects or solving puzzles, can support brain function. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition from a young age is considered a preventative measure against future cognitive impairment.
