Mental health treatment gaps persist despite rising public awareness
Mental health treatment gaps remain a critical issue globally and regionally. According to the Pan American Health Organization, the treatment gap for mental disorders in Latin America and the Caribbean is expected to exceed 77.9% in 2024, meaning nearly eight out of ten people living with a mental health condition do not receive professional care.
Barriers to care include public stigma, structural barriers such as insufficient resources, and self-stigma. In some cultures, misconceptions persist that psychological help is only for extreme cases, or that conditions like anxiety and depression are merely a lack of willpower.
In Spain, data from the 2023 Health Survey indicates that approximately 29.8% of the adult population exhibits depressive symptoms. While public conversation regarding mental health has increased, many individuals hesitate to seek help due to the uncertainty of starting therapy. Online platforms are increasingly being used to lower these barriers, emphasizing that the quality of the therapeutic bond is more critical to success than the specific format of the session.
