Mental health trends and the psychological benefits of reading
Recent data and research highlight growing mental health challenges and potential lifestyle interventions. A survey by the Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH) of 1,000 adults in Germany indicates that 54 percent of respondents experience more stress than in previous years, with 61 percent reporting sleep disturbances and 57 percent feeling exhausted or burnt out.
Psychiatrist Jan Kalbitzer suggests that instead of suppressing difficult emotions like anger, fear, or shame, individuals should use them as opportunities for learning. Additionally, emotion researcher Carlotta Welding notes that approximately 10 percent of the population experiences alexithymia, a condition characterized by difficulty perceiving, distinguishing, and naming emotions.
In terms of prevention, research suggests that recreational reading can positively impact psychological well-being. A survey of 4,164 adults found that 68 percent felt less stressed after just a few minutes of reading. Furthermore, 64 percent of respondents reported a better understanding of others' feelings with as little as 30 minutes of reading per week, and 50 percent reported becoming more tolerant of different beliefs.
