Mental healthcare access varies widely across U.S. states
According to the 2025 State of Mental Health in America report by Mental Health America (MHA), access to mental healthcare in the United States varies significantly by state. Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts were ranked highest for access, while Alabama, Texas, and South Carolina ranked lowest.
Key barriers to care include cost and navigation difficulties. In 2023, approximately 60% of adults who needed mental healthcare did not receive it due to concerns over cost. Additionally, nearly half of those in need did not know how or where to seek help, and 41% were unable to find a preferred provider.
Geographic location also plays a role, as rural areas often face a shortage of providers, with many communities located at least 30 minutes away from a facility. Virtual care and online mental health services are increasingly being used to bridge these gaps for underserved and rural populations.
