Menteşe, Turkey Experiences Small Dust Tornadoes

On a hot day in early August 2026, small-scale dust tornadoes formed in the newly developed Akçaova neighbourhood of Menteşe district, Muğla Province, Turkey. The vortices, reaching heights of about 20‑25 metres, lifted loose soil and created visible dust clouds. Multiple funnels appeared simultaneously at different points across the sparsely vegetated, open settlement area.

Meteorological experts explained that the phenomenon results from extreme ground heating that causes the surface soil to become buoyant, producing short‑lived whirlwinds. They emphasized that these “dust tornadoes” are harmless and should not be confused with severe tornadoes. Local residents watched the unusual sight, describing it as an interesting natural display rather than a cause for alarm.
