Menter Môn Morlais tidal energy project seeks government support

The organization behind the Menter Môn Morlais tidal energy project has called for sustained government backing as it prepares for its first turbine deployment, which is expected in 2027.

During a visit to the scheme off Ynys Môn, Adam Price, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, discussed the potential for tidal energy to provide predictable renewable electricity and enhance energy security. The project is designed to be developed in phases, with a potential maximum generating capacity of 240 megawatts. This gradual rollout aims to protect local wildlife and habitats.

John Idris Jones, chair of Menter Môn Morlais, stated that continued support is necessary to realize the project's full potential and to help place Wales and the UK within the global marine energy sector. The project, managed by Menter Môn Morlais Ltd, is intended to create opportunities for local businesses, apprentices, and supply chains while generating low-carbon electricity.
