Mentholatum recalls Deep Heat cream in Australia over bacterial contamination

Mentholatum Australasia has issued an urgent recall for 100g packages of Deep Heat Extra Strength cream in Australia due to bacterial contamination. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announced that two specific batches, numbered V772 and V773 with an expiry date of June 2029, were found to contain “higher than acceptable levels” of the bacterium Pluralibacter gergoviae.

While infections in healthy individuals are rare, Melbec Microbiology warns that the bacteria can cause severe infections, including respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and sepsis. Individuals with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or those recovering from surgery are at a particularly high risk.

The TGA advises consumers to stop using the affected batches immediately and return them to the place of purchase or contact the manufacturer for further guidance.
