Mentmore Towers historic palace faces decay and legal hurdles

Mentmore Towers, a grand palace in Buckinghamshire, England, is facing severe decay and has been placed on the endangered cultural heritage list. Built between 1852 and 1854 by Sir Joseph Paxton and George Henry Stokes, the estate was formerly the home of the Rothschild banking family.

Following a purchase by British investor Simon Halabi with plans to convert the site into a luxury hotel and film set, the early 2000s financial crisis halted development. The building now suffers from broken windows, collapsing roofs, and water damage. While local authorities have issued orders for urgent repairs under threat of compulsory sale, restoration efforts face a unique legal hurdle: the building is currently inhabited by protected bats. Under English law, the bats and their habitats are protected, meaning owners must obtain specific permits and conduct professional assessments before any structural repairs can begin.

The estate is notable for its cinematic history, having appeared in Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and serving as the home of Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman Begins’.
