Meo and Thales propose Portuguese teleports for IRIS² constellation

Meo and Thales are proposing to integrate the Alfouvar and Santa Maria teleports in Portugal into the IRIS² European satellite constellation. IRIS² is designed to serve as a secure European alternative to Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The SpaceRise consortium, which includes SES, Eutelsat, and Hispasat, aims to utilize existing ground infrastructure to begin services. The Alfouvar site, a 12-hectare facility located in Sintra near Lisbon, already hosts installations belonging to two consortium members.

While current infrastructure will support initial operations, the full project involves the construction of new gateways. Plans include the installation of between 12 and 25 new antennas at the site, pending regulatory approval.
