MEO, NOS, and Vodafone launch anti-fraud tools in Portugal

Portuguese telecommunications operators MEO, NOS, and Vodafone have partnered with Nokia and the GSMA to implement the Open Gateway initiative. This collaboration aims to combat the rising tide of digital fraud, which saw a 45% increase last year according to Banco de Portugal.

The initiative utilizes the open-source CAMARA standard to provide a common technical language for network capabilities. This allows global companies to use standardized Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) across different networks and countries.

Two specific tools were introduced to the Portuguese market:

1. SIM Swap detection: This tool allows banks to verify if a mobile number has been transferred to a new SIM card within the last 24 to 48 hours, helping to prevent criminals from hijacking accounts via unauthorized SIM replacements.

2. Number Verification: This functionality enables institutions to confirm that a user is accessing an account through the specific mobile number associated with that account.
