Meppen officials highlight agricultural challenges during harvest ceremony
In Meppen, Germany, the local district office has once again displayed the 'Erntekrone' (harvest crown), a handmade symbol of gratitude for agricultural yields. During the presentation of the crown to District Administrator Marc-André Burgdorf, Monika Uphaus, chairwoman of the Meppen District Rural Women, highlighted the ongoing challenges facing the sector.
Uphaus noted that while artificial intelligence is increasingly used in farming, it cannot mitigate the impacts of climate change, such as the extreme droughts that have led to crop failures and income losses this year. She urged consumers to support the industry by purchasing regional food products.
District Administrator Burgdorf added that farmers are facing additional pressures from falling prices, particularly in pork, and excessive regulation. He expressed concern regarding the future of the industry, questioning whether the next generation will be able to take over farms under current economic and environmental conditions, while emphasizing that food security remains dependent on a stable agricultural sector.
