MEPs call for ethics investigation into FIFA president over Trump peace prize

More than 50 members of the European Parliament have sent a letter urging the FIFA Ethics Committee to investigate President Gianni Infantino for alleged breach of the organization’s political‑neutrality rules after he awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to U.S. President Donald Trump at the World Cup draw. The complaint, originally filed by the governance NGO FairSquare, is backed by the Norwegian Football Federation and highlighted by MEP Barry Andrews of Ireland, who said the award “damages the image of FIFA and the tournament.”

The letter claims Infantino’s favouritism toward a political leader violates the FIFA Ethics Code and calls for a transparent, due‑process inquiry. Infantino has also faced criticism for extensive private‑jet travel across the United States, Mexico and Canada during the tournament, which critics say undermines FIFA’s sustainability commitments.
