Ömer Akyol released from prison after 30 years

Ömer Akyol, a member of the PKK, has been released from Izmir Prison No. 3 after serving 30 years in captivity. Akyol was originally arrested on August 21, 1996, in the Ebex district of Van province.

Following his arrest, Akyol was held in several facilities, including Diluk Prison in Gaziantep and Elih Prison in Batman, before his final transfer to Izmir. Upon his release, he was met by his brother, representatives of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), and members of the Association for Solidarity and Solidarity with the Families of Prisoners and Convicts in the Aegean Region (EGE-TUHAYDER).

Akyol expressed mixed emotions regarding his release, stating that while he is happy to experience freedom, he is saddened that his comrades remain imprisoned. He also voiced support for the peace and democratic society process initiated by Abdullah Öcalan, expressing belief in its eventual success despite potential attempts at sabotage.
