Turkey's Ortahisar and Konya districts push historic preservation amid urban renewal
In Ortahisar neighbourhood of Trabzon, muhtar Süleyman Yaşar Kara said municipal services are adequate but summer pest‑control does not reach side streets. He warned that historic buildings receive no restoration work because of high costs and economic constraints, and that some vacant structures are already collapsing on their own. The area also awaits, but does not expect soon, a larger urban‑renewal program.
In the Meram district of Konya, mayor Mustafa Kavuş inspected ongoing archaeological excavations at Larende Gate, Karahöyük and the ancient site of Lystra. Around 60 workers from the Konya Museum Directorate, the metropolitan municipality and Meram municipality are conducting digs that aim to uncover artefacts and restore historic structures, with the goal of boosting tourism.
Meanwhile, in Konya’s Şems‑i Tebrizi neighbourhood, demolition work has begun after the evacuation of the former Imam Hatip High School and nearby shops. The city’s urban‑transformation plan seeks to clear the area, create a more open public space and improve the neighbourhood’s appearance.
