Meram, Turkey, celebrates centuries-old cheese harvesting tradition
In the Kızılören neighborhood of Meram, Konya, a centuries-old tradition known as ‘İnden Peynir Çıkarma’ was recently observed. Organized by the Meram Municipality in collaboration with the Kızılören Education, Culture, Solidarity, and Charity Foundation, the event marked the retrieval of approximately 10 tons of tulum cheese from natural caves.
The cheese is placed in these caves during the summer months to undergo a natural maturation process facilitated by the stable temperature and humidity of the underground environment. This year, the harvest involved roughly 400 families who use the cheese for winter food supplies or sell portions to supplement their household income.
Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş emphasized the importance of preserving the region's living culture and passing it to future generations. AK Party Konya Deputy Mehmet Baykan also attended, noting the role of local government in maintaining these cultural values.
