Merano horse racing protest announced by LAV

The Lega Anti Vivisezione (LAV) has announced a protest scheduled for Sunday, September 27, in front of the Merano racecourse. The demonstration, set to take place between 12:00 and 15:00, coincides with the 87th edition of the Gran Premio Merano Alto Adige.

LAV is campaigning for animal welfare, arguing that horse racing is an “act of cruelty.” The association highlights the physical risks posed to horses by high speeds, obstacles, and competitive pressure. Under the slogan “No race is worth a life,” the group aims to raise awareness against the use of animals in equestrian competitions.

The protest also targets a provincial Masterplan for the redevelopment of the 40-hectare Maia area. The project involves an initial investment of 21 million euros and is slated to begin in 2029. While the plan includes multifunctional spaces, an interactive horse museum, and veterinary enhancements, LAV opposes the portion of the funding dedicated to maintaining equestrian activities.
