Merauke leaders urge integration of indigenous institutions in regional development
During a discussion forum in Merauke regarding the strengthening and protection of indigenous legal communities, leaders emphasized the need to integrate indigenous institutions into regional development processes.
Yohanis Agabi Mahuze, leader of the Kalai Woyu Maklew indigenous group, argued that development should proceed alongside the strengthening of indigenous institutions to preserve social life, culture, and local knowledge. He called for concrete government support and requested that indigenous communities be given space in the development process rather than being engaged only when conflicts arise. He noted that development programs should consider the social conditions and cultural characteristics of local communities.
Sukito, Head of the Merauke National Unity and Politics Agency (Kesbangpol), supported this by stating that indigenous leaders and institutions possess strong social influence. He proposed that they serve as strategic partners to the government in maintaining order, facilitating communication, and preventing social issues from escalating into conflicts. Sukito emphasized that maintaining a conducive environment through dialogue is a prerequisite for successful regional development.
