Mercado 16 de Septiembre celebrates 51 years in Toluca
The Mercado 16 de Septiembre in Toluca celebrated its 51st anniversary, marking its long-standing role as a key commercial and traditional hub for the city. During the commemoration, Ana Yolanda Esquivel Jaramillo, the General Director of Economic Development, represented municipal president Ricardo Moreno Bastida to recognize the merchant families who have sustained the market's economic activity.
Many businesses within the market have been passed down through three or even four generations, preserving local trades and economic dynamics. The market's history is linked to the site of the former Botanical Garden, with its current era beginning in 1975.
Authorities noted that the facility requires ongoing maintenance and coordination between merchants and the municipality. Recent administrative improvements include the recovery of restroom management in 2025 and parking lot management in 2026, aimed at improving conditions for both workers and visitors.
