Mercado Pago error causes massive toll overcharges on Ricchieri highway

A technical error in the Mercado Pago system caused significant overcharges for Telepase users traveling through the southern corridor of the Ricchieri highway on Friday, August 14. Between 10:00 and 18:00, the system recorded charges as high as $155,802, which is approximately one hundred times the standard toll rate of roughly $1,548.

Many users discovered the discrepancy through automatic alerts from their banks and credit card providers regarding unusual spending, while others noticed the amounts when reviewing their account statements. The company responsible for the collection identified the issue and worked to resolve it.

Affected users are advised to review their financial movements and file formal claims if they detect incorrect charges. The incident has raised concerns regarding the reliability of automated digital payment systems used for daily transit in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.
