Mercadona faces scrutiny over sourcing and family business roles

Juan Roig, the executive president and primary shareholder of the Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona, remains a central figure in both the company’s operations and the public eye. His daughter, Juana Roig, has joined the family business following a career in the textile sector. After studying Business Administration at Esade, she has taken on roles within the company’s purchasing department and participates in its administrative bodies.

Controversy has also emerged regarding the company’s sourcing practices. While the Asociación Valenciana de Empresarios (AVE), of which Roig is a board member, has promoted campaigns supporting Ceuta, Mercadona’s inventory includes various products sourced from Morocco. Labels on items such as chives, peppers, anchovies, and mackerel identify Morocco as the country of origin, processing, or manufacturing.
