Mercadona launches new Tienda 9 supermarket model in Madrid and Bilbao
Mercadona has launched its new ‘Tienda 9’ supermarket model in Madrid and Bilbao, marking a significant evolution from its previous ‘Tienda 8’ format. The company aims to have approximately 60 stores adapted to this model by 2026.
The new design shifts from a business-based organization to a process-based structure. A central feature is the ‘Obrador Central’, which unifies the preparation, cutting, cooking, and packaging of fresh products into a single area. This centralization is intended to increase the space available for fresh goods, improve shopping intuition, and enhance operational efficiency for staff by reducing unnecessary movement.
In Madrid, the new location in the Chamberí district involved an investment of 9.2 million euros. In Bilbao, the Miribilla neighborhood saw the reopening of a renovated store with an investment of 1.9 million euros. The model also incorporates new technological tools and electronic devices to facilitate self-management and streamline decision-making processes.
