Mercadona opens first ‘Tienda 9’ in Castilla-La Mancha

Mercadona has inaugurated its first ‘Tienda 9’ model in Castilla-La Mancha, located in Guadalajara. The project involved a 2.9 million euro investment to remodel the existing supermarket on Capitán Arenas street.

The new format features a 1,596 square meter sales area and a reorganized layout that shifts from traditional commercial sections to process-based zones. A central workshop (Obrador Central) has been implemented to consolidate the cutting, cooking, and packaging of fresh products. This new system is designed to improve food freshness and efficiency, with the company reporting potential savings of up to 10% in energy consumption and 40% in water usage.

This opening is part of a broader transformation plan by Mercadona, which aims to have approximately 60 ‘Tienda 9’ supermarkets across Spain by the end of 2026. The company’s long-term investment strategy for its commercial network is projected to reach 3.7 billion euros between 2026 and 2033.
