Mercadona implements new store hours and modernization strategy

Mercadona is implementing several operational and structural changes across its Spanish locations. As the summer season ends, the supermarket chain is reverting to its standard winter schedule. This means many stores, particularly in tourist areas like Tarragona, will close at 21:30 instead of the 22:00 summer extension, and Sunday openings will cease.

Simultaneously, the company is accelerating a long-term modernization strategy to compete with retailers like Lidl. This includes the rollout of the ‘Tienda 9’ model, aimed for completion by 2030. In some locations, such as Vigo, this involves significant interior modifications, including the removal of traditional fishmonger counters in favor of pre-packaged fish trays to create a more dynamic shopping environment.
