Mercari reports surge in used iPhone listings following new model announcements
Mercari has released data regarding trends in the used smartphone market following the announcement of new iPhone models. The company reported that in 2025, listings for previous iPhone models surged approximately fivefold in October immediately following the new product announcement. Trading volume for used smartphones typically peaks between autumn and the end of the year, reaching about 1.6 times the monthly average in December.
Mercari also shared performance metrics for its quality-guaranteed reuse service, ‘m department’. As of August 18, the service has handled approximately 30,000 units across 150 models. The most popular model purchased through the service is the iPhone SE (3rd generation), followed by the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12. While iPhones dominate the top rankings, Android devices such as the Google Pixel 8a and Pixel 7a also appear in the top ten, with most popular models priced between 10,000 and 50,000 yen.
The company noted that 84.5% of ‘m department’ customers were either new to the platform or had not purchased electronics on Mercari for over a year, suggesting the service is attracting a new segment of users through its professional inspection and warranty systems.
