Mercari tests new “limited access” listing feature

Mercari has begun a trial rollout of a new “limited access” (限定公開) feature that allows sellers to list items accessible only to users who possess the specific product page URL. Unlike standard listings, these items do not appear in search results, recommendations, or on the seller’s profile, and they do not trigger new arrival notifications for followers.

To use this feature, sellers must meet specific criteria: a seller level of 4 or higher (at least 10 sales), completed identity verification via the app, and a product price of 9,999 yen or less. The feature is intended to facilitate safer transactions for users who coordinate sales via external social media platforms, allowing them to use Mercari’s payment and shipping infrastructure rather than handling money and addresses directly on SNS.

However, the feature has sparked debate on social media. While it can help prevent unintended users from accessing specific items, critics have raised concerns that the ability to conduct transactions away from public view could potentially facilitate the sale of stolen goods or money laundering.
