Mercedes activates ‘Plan B’ to defend F1 Constructors' Championship lead

Mercedes has activated a ‘Plan B’ regarding the development of its W17 car to protect its position in the Formula 1 Constructors' Championship. The team had originally intended to halt development on the W17 after the first half of the season to redirect budget and resources toward the 2027 W18 project.

However, reliability issues with the power unit affecting drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, combined with the rapid performance gains from Ferrari and McLaren, have forced a change in strategy. While Mercedes maintains a lead of approximately 70 to 72 points over Ferrari, the team remains cautious as Ferrari is expected to introduce engine upgrades in the second half of the season.

Rather than designing entirely new components from scratch, the Brackley-based team will move into production with upgrades that were previously designed but shelved to manage costs. Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that the team will bring updates to the track, noting that they are in a good position regarding the budget cap.
