Mercedes admits performance gap to McLaren after Dutch Grand Prix

Mercedes leadership has acknowledged a performance gap following the Dutch Grand Prix, where McLaren's Lando Norris secured a victory with a margin of over ten seconds. Despite a double podium finish with Kimi Antonelli in second and George Russell in third, the team admitted they struggled to match McLaren's pace, particularly through high-speed corners.

Team Principal Toto Wolff noted that while Mercedes held an early advantage on medium tires, their lap times fell away as McLaren grew stronger. Wolff attributed this to a strategic decision to distribute the team's budget more evenly throughout the season, whereas rivals like McLaren and Ferrari have utilized more aggressive development cycles. This approach may limit Mercedes' ability to respond immediately to rapid updates from competitors.

Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord highlighted that although the team was on the defensive and lacked the fastest car during the race, the points haul was their second-best of the season. This result allowed Mercedes to extend their lead in the Constructors' Championship, even as McLaren continues a winning streak.
