Mercedes-Benz engine technologies: From M282 collaboration to OM 617 durability

Mercedes-Benz utilizes various engine technologies, ranging from collaborative developments to historically renowned mechanical designs. The M282 is a 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine developed in collaboration with the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. Although based on shared architecture, Mercedes-Benz produces its versions via MDC Power GmbH in Turingia, utilizing unique software, different turbochargers, and specific technologies such as TWA cylinder coating.

In contrast to modern complex systems, the legendary OM 617 five-cylinder diesel engine is noted for its extreme durability and mechanical simplicity. Produced between 1974 and 1991, this engine was frequently used in the Mercedes W123 model. Due to its robust construction and lack of complex electronics, many units were capable of exceeding one million kilometers with regular maintenance.
