Mercedes-Benz launches bidirectional EV charging in Germany

Mercedes-Benz, in partnership with The Mobility House Energy, is launching a bidirectional charging service in Germany. Through the ‘MB. Charge Home Pro Intelligent’ package, electric vehicle owners can use their car batteries as intermediate storage for the public power grid. By feeding electricity back into the system during high demand, customers can potentially earn over 500 euros annually. The service initially supports the GLC and C-Class models, with more models to follow via software updates.

In parallel, German cities are testing innovative charging infrastructure to address space constraints in urban areas. Kassel is piloting ‘charging curbs’—integrated connection points built directly into sidewalks—to provide electricity in residential neighborhoods where traditional charging stations might obstruct pedestrian or bicycle traffic. Bad Homburg has also been testing similar technology for approximately one year. These Rheinmetall-manufactured curbs provide up to 22 kW of AC power and are designed to be weather-resistant and heated for year-round use.
