Mercedes-Benz advances autonomous driving in China with Level 2++
Mercedes‑Benz AG is introducing a new driver‑assistance package dubbed Level 2++ on all Mercedes models sold in China since the CLA. The system, priced at roughly €1,250 per vehicle, can take over navigation, change lanes, stop at red lights, drive on green, negotiate oncoming traffic and, in some cases, use bike lanes. The driver remains legally responsible and must not operate a phone while the system is active.
Bernd Woltermann, head of assistance‑system development for Mercedes in China, described the feature as “point‑to‑point navigation” and a step toward full autopilot. Mercedes development chief Jörg Burzer said the next level of the MB Drive Assist will soon be offered to European customers as regulations relax, with Brussels expected to permit broader city‑traffic autonomy.
The rollout highlights Mercedes‑Benz’s push to lead high‑assist driving technology, positioning the company ahead of rivals in the Chinese market while preparing for wider European adoption.
