Mercedes-Benz to launch EVs built with 75% recycled aluminium

Mercedes‑Benz will become the first European carmaker to use Hydro’s Circal aluminium containing at least 75% post‑consumer recycled content in series production of its next‑generation large electric vehicles. The material, sourced from end‑of‑life cars, buildings and infrastructure, is intended to meet all performance, quality and safety standards while shortening the supply chain.

The partnership also includes Hydro’s Reduxa primary aluminium, smelted with renewable electricity and delivering a carbon footprint more than 70% lower than the global average for traditional primary aluminium. A letter of intent signed in December 2022 was expanded in 2024 to cover the full value chain. Hydro President and CEO Eivind Kallevik said the combined use of recycled and low‑CO₂ primary aluminium will accelerate the shift to lower‑emission vehicles.
