Mercedes-Benz updates SUV lineup and refines electric vehicle strategy

Mercedes-Benz is implementing a significant strategic shift in its vehicle lineup, focusing on integrating electric technology with traditional models. In the United States, the company is providing major updates to its large SUV range, including the GLE and GLS. These updates feature redesigned exteriors, new interior digital interfaces like the ‘Superscreen’, and the introduction of mild-hybrid powertrains. Notably, the GLE is receiving a second facelift to extend its lifecycle due to shifting market demands for hybrid options over pure electric models.

In India, the brand is seeing strong demand for its electric transition, with the Electric GLC 400 4MATIC securing over 650 bookings within 36 hours of interest opening. Meanwhile, the company is refining its electric strategy globally; for instance, the upcoming seventh-generation E-Class is expected to adopt a more traditional three-box design to better appeal to luxury buyers, moving away from the previous ‘jellybean’ aesthetic of the EQ series.

However, the transition has faced challenges. Mercedes is reportedly withdrawing certain electric models, such as the EQE Sedan and Maybach EQS, from the US market by 2027 as it moves toward a naming convention that aligns electric vehicles more closely with its classic combustion-engine lineup.
