Mercedes delays introduction of new ADUO power unit
Mercedes has postponed the introduction of its upgraded power unit, originally intended for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas. The engine, developed under the FIA’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system, is not yet sufficiently mature for competition.
Reports indicate the update will likely not arrive in time for the Mexican Grand Prix either. The Brazilian Grand Prix is now viewed as the most probable debut for the new specification.
The ADUO system allows manufacturers trailing the benchmark engine—currently Red Bull Ford—by a specific performance margin to receive additional development opportunities. Once the upgrade is eventually implemented, drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli are expected to face grid penalties as their power unit components will exceed the permitted limits.
