Mercedes drivers encounter speed loss and mechanical trouble at British Grand Prix

At Silverstone, George Russell reported a straight‑line speed deficit of about 6 km/h in qualifying, despite identical energy‑recovery strategies to teammate Kimi Antonelli. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the cause was unclear and under investigation.

Antonelli, who became the youngest championship leader, led much of the race but suffered damage to his Mercedes W17 wheel deflector on lap 41, requiring two pit stops and later a five‑second penalty for exceeding track limits. He finished ninth after the penalty dropped him out of the points.

Russell recovered to finish second, narrowing the championship gap to 25 points, while Lewis Hamilton remains within striking distance.
