Mercedes electric vehicle destroyed by battery fire in Aydın
A Mercedes AMG EQE 53 electric vehicle, valued at approximately 8 million TL, was destroyed by a battery-related fire near Sazlıköy in the Söke district of Aydın, Turkey. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 22, while the vehicle was traveling from İzmir toward Bodrum.
Firefighters from the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department utilized a specialized next-generation extinguishing tent and a fire blanket capable of withstanding 2,100 degrees Celsius to manage the blaze. This specialized equipment was critical in preventing the fire from spreading to nearby forested and mountainous areas and in containing the release of toxic gases.
The struggle to control the fire lasted approximately 12 hours, concluding only after the battery energy was completely depleted. Taner Günhan, Head of the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, noted that in his 30-year career, this was the first time he had encountered a fire of this intensity involving an electric vehicle.
